It should also be noted that appeals are normally lodged by both (in multi accused cases all) parties. Therefore, the real number of appeals is much higher than the number of judgements on appeal.

The authorities should ensure that all judicial procedures conform to internationally recognized standards of fair trial, including the right to the presumption of innocence, the right to a public trial and the right to appeal to a higher tribunal.
