We affirm and support the commitments of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action while bearing in mind that the objectives are not yet attained.

Broken Promises

Canadians are fully aware that these commitments are not made without considerable sacrifice.

This expectation was not realized.

One objective still to be achieved was the drafting of a fissile material cut off treaty.

In fact, neither expectation was fulfilled.

But, unfortunately, our hopes have not been realized.

On the liability side, unliquidated obligations and other payables represent expenditures that have been incurred but not yet disbursed.

Second, the G 8 Summit communiqué simply did not mention the unmet commitments at all.

Cesur Ambalaj pulled out because of unkept promises.

But this generalized benefit has failed to materialize.

But such plans have not been realized, owing to the absence of a cooperative culture.

But the goals laid out in the Oslo Accords remain unfulfilled.

But, in broad terms, the prophecy of vastly increased leisure for all has not been fulfilled.

A substantial increase in official development assistance to developing countries has not been achieved.

I regret that the Secretary General's ambitious vision has not yet been fully realized.

Unless we all pick up speed, most Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) will not be met by 2015.

If these assumptions are not realised, then trials may well be pushed beyond that date.

In some parts of the world, rising expectations, if unfulfilled, could make the kinds of effects that Friedman describes especially strong.
