Since December 31, 1995, Turkey is also a part of the EU Customs Union.

In Europe, Moldova, Ukraine, and the Caucasian countries prefer free trade agreements with the European Union, which the customs union would preempt.

Moreover, the customs union makes it almost impossible for Russia to conclude any free trade agreement with the EU.

Ukraine s alternative would be to join a Russian dominated Customs Union that includes Belarus and Kazakhstan.
