The Office is now focusing on a mapping of key components in the justice sector, including approaches to truth commissions and prosecution models with regard to serious human rights violations operational guidelines for vetting personnel in the justice sector and a methodology for monitoring legal systems.

Three new projects in justice and the rule of law support the master plan of the Afghan Judicial Reform Commission in the reform of the criminal justice system, the penitentiary system and the juvenile justice system.

Furthering the reform of the justice and penal systems should be pursued in parallel to the efforts to professionalize the police.

It will now form the basis for strengthening the EU Afghan partnership across a wide range of areas, including political and economic governance, security sector reform and justice sector reform, counter narcotics, development, human rights, civil society and refugee return, education and culture.

Reforming the rule of law and re establishing criminal justice systems have become even more essential to post conflict societies.
