A third argument is that if speculation were to blame for price increases, there should have been an increase in oil inventories, because speculators do not consume oil but instead store it for later sale.

Price discrimination uses market characteristics (such as price elasticity) to adjust prices, whereas yield management uses product characteristics.

Moreover, energy and food price shocks can be both large and largely unpredictable, while the speed of price changes tends to increase with big shocks.
