It calls upon all countries to implement the revised International Health Regulations, expresses concern about a possible pandemic of human influenza arising from avian influenza and welcomes relevant responses by the United Nations and other appropriate international and national measures.

The threat of avian influenza and other infectious diseases is far from over, and the possibility of the outbreak of a large scale pandemic still exists.

So far, a relatively small number of human beings have died from the current strain of avian influenza, and it appears that they have all been in contact with infected birds.

We are concerned with emerging new diseases such as SARS, Avian Influenza and other virus related diseases that appear in different parts of the world and can cause an epidemic within a short period of time, as well as adversely affect social and economic well being of our peoples.

The known subtypes of Influenza A virus that create influenza in pigs and are endemic in pigs are H1N1, H1N2, H3N1 and H3N2.

Different viruses predominate at different periods of the year during influenza season, for example, influenza may account for over half of all viral cases.

Even worse, the most common influenza influenza A also infects animals that live in close proximity to humans, and they can recombine in those particular animals.

There is every reason to take these events seriously, because EID s appear to have a long evolutionary history.
