Porta Pia is a gate in the Aurelian Walls of Rome, Italy.

Porta Sant'Angelo , one of the four Ancient Roman Gates to the city, much restored.

Giacomo della Porta (c. 1533 1602) was an Italian architect and sculptor, who worked on many important buildings in Rome, including St. Peter's Basilica.

And it was only when this was lifted in 1870, owing to the outbreak of the Franco Prussian War, that Italian troops were able to capture Rome entering the city through a breach near Porta Pia.
