Multi stakeholder dialogue

At its first session in 2001, the Forum had noted the value of multi stakeholder dialogues in advancing the work of the Forum.

Pursuant to its resolution 1 1, the Forum holds a multi stakeholder dialogue as a common element of every session.

C. Participation, Conflict and Multi Stakeholder Processes

The present note has been prepared to facilitate the multi stakeholder dialogue at the fifth session of the United Nations Forum on Forests.

CPF members state that the multi stakeholder dialogue at sessions of the Forum and the participation of civil society in intersessional activities have been beneficial.

It has been suggested that the multi stakeholder dialogue of a session be focused on seeking multi stakeholder perspectives on the specific agenda items of that session.

Since its second session, the Forum has held multi stakeholder dialogues to allow for an exchange of views between Government delegates and the representatives of major groups.

To make this happen, collaborative multi stakeholder efforts would be needed.

Members of the group have also participated in ongoing multi stakeholder consultations on the issue organized by the World Economic Forum as part of the financing for development process.

E. Advocacy, education and outreach efforts the need for multi stakeholder approaches

Outreach and strategic engagement activities will culminate in a GEO Forum a major intergovernmental and multi stakeholder event organized to consider the GEO 4 assessment findings and broaden its audience.

The Forum should ensure the opportunity to receive and consider inputs from representatives of major groups as identified in Agenda 21, in particular through the organization of multi stakeholder dialogues.

More space for multi stakeholder dialogue is also needed in the United Nations.

The biennial World Urban Forum was established by the Governing Council of UN Habitat in its resolution 18 5 as a multi stakeholder forum to support dialogue and the exchange of experience in support of the implementation of the Habitat Agenda.

Key flanking initiatives at the international level could include a multi stakeholder forum for sustainable resource use and an international metal covenant to promote recycling and material flow management with industry involvement.

Major groups stress the value of the multi stakeholder dialogue in promoting cooperation and consensus.

It is also recognized that the implementation requires decision making processes that are multi stakeholder based.3

Multi stakeholder alliances at a global level are growing and try to address global public concerns (e.g., environmental degradation, AIDS).

These have been integrated and mainstreamed into our national development strategy formulated through a multisectoral and multi stakeholder consultative process.

Multi stakeholder dialogues organized on the basis of modalities proposed by the secretariat of the United Nations Forum on Forests have been seen by non governmental organizations and other major groups as a way to segregate the input provided by those stakeholders.

Major groups are providing discussion papers and the Bureau for the fifth session of the Forum has decided to integrate the multi stakeholder dialogue into the plenary and working group meetings, as well as into the high level segment of the session.

There is a need for enabling legislation on multi stakeholder processes that sets umbrella goals, leaving the specific implementation to lower levels.

7. Calls upon the international community to continue to promote multi stakeholder approaches in addressing the challenges of development in the context of globalization

Voluntary, multi stakeholder partnerships working towards sustainable development goals have proved to be an important complementary outcome of the World Summit on Sustainable Development.

Countries note that opportunities are provided through discussions of the themes of the Forum sessions, multi stakeholder dialogues, panel discussions and side events, but there should be a more interactive discussion held during plenary sessions and a greater involvement of those actively engaged in implementation at the national level.

The Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) has promoted the economic empowerment of rural women through multi stakeholder dialogues and capacity building.

Most non governmental organizations involved in the international forest policy debate think that multi stakeholder dialogues are inappropriate vehicles through which to channel civil society's views.
