Irène Joliot Curie (12 September 1897 17 March 1956) was a French scientist, the daughter of Marie Skłodowska Curie and Pierre Curie and the wife of Frédéric Joliot Curie.

At its 32nd meeting, on 17 May 2005, the Chief of the Non Governmental Organizations Section of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs, Ms. Hanifa Mezoui, presented the progress report of the United Nations Non Governmental Organizations Informal Regional Network (UN NGO IRENE).

The question of sovereignty over natural resources, including forests, minerals, water and pastures, was also raised, with several speakers welcoming the final report of the Special Rapporteur, Erica Irene A. Daes, on indigenous peoples' permanent sovereignty over natural resources (E CN.4 Sub.2 2004 30 and Add.1).

The Working Group on Indigenous Populations also decided, as part of its standard setting activities, to review the draft principles and guidelines for the protection of the heritage of indigenous peoples (document E CN.4 Sub.2 1995 26) drafted by Mrs. Erica Irene Daes, Special Rapporteur of the Sub Commission.

Four NGO surveys were developed, including a NGO survey on Poverty Eradication and the MDGs with WFUNA, an NGO survey on MDGs conducted by the NGO Section, a survey on MDGs, ICT and Information Society conducted with ATM (UN NGO IRENE Africa Coordinator), and the Annual WFUNA People Surveys on MDGs.

It has been working intensively on capacity building, awareness generation, skill development, organization of women in Self Help Groups (SHGs) for their empowerment etc. AIWEFA also took up networking with other NGOs under the UN NGO IRENE and has been able to form partnerships with a number of other NGOs in the country with similar objectives.
