I now turn to the matter of the Blue Line separating Israel and Lebanon.

The incidents along the Blue Line of 29 June and 12 July illustrate once again the need for the Government of Lebanon to make every effort to prevent attacks from its side of the Blue Line.

The two UNIFIL battalions, provided by India and Ghana, continually monitor the approaches to the Blue Line through observation and patrolling from 21 military positions close to the Blue Line supported by 19 intermediate and depth positions.

We also condemn all violations of the Blue Line, whether by land or by air.

A series of incidents last week escalated tensions along the Blue Line to an alarming degree.

These circumstances make it possible for Hizbollah forces to be visible close to the Blue Line, to maintain posts that are sometimes immediately adjacent to IDF and UNIFIL positions and, at times, to carry out attacks across the Blue Line.

But the short story is If you're a patient, you want to be on the blue line.

He called on all parties to cease such violations and ensure total calm along the Blue Line.

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon continued to monitor the Blue Line between Israel and Lebanon.

Regrettably, Israeli air violations of the Blue Line have continued to occur, albeit with somewhat reduced frequency.

There were no instances of Hizbollah anti aircraft fire across the Blue Line during the reporting period.

During the past month, Israeli air violations of the Blue Line also continued to occur, albeit less frequently.

The overflights occurred sporadically, but in considerable numbers at times, disturbing the relative calm along the Blue Line.

Over the past month, there has been one significant incident involving an exchange of fire across the Blue Line.

With regard to the situation in southern Lebanon, the past two months have been relatively calm along the Blue Line.

The rocket was reportedly set in a firing position and was located only about two kilometres from the Blue Line.

In a few instances, IDF fired small and medium arms fire across the Blue Line, mainly in the Shab'a farms area.

Such peacemakers formed part of the thin blue line that protected the peace, providing security, bolstering stability, and protecting vulnerable populations.

Meanwhile, Israeli warplanes have continued to violate the Blue Line and Lebanese airspace, although such violations appear to have been less frequent.

UNIFIL recorded a number of Lebanese ground violations of the Blue Line, primarily by shepherds, in the Shab'a farms and Ghajar areas.

This attack is one of many violations of the blue line and represents a serious risk to the stability of the region.

In addition, I wish to reiterate our condemnation of the repeated violations of the Blue Line and our call upon the parties to cease such violations and respect the Line in its entirety.

On 29 June the Security Council met to discuss the exchange of fire that had taken place that day between Hizbullah and the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF), which began when a group of Hizbullah fighters breached the Blue Line in the Shaba'a farms area one of several incidents along the Blue Line.

The persistence of violent incidents and violations along the length of the Blue Line underlines the importance of UNIFIL's presence on the ground.

My country is particularly concerned that, despite a period of relative calm along the Blue Line, tension between the parties remains very high.

In his meetings with the Government of Lebanon, he discussed, among other matters, the need to improve the situation along the Blue Line.

We call again on the Israeli authorities to halt those overflights and on all parties to respect the Blue Line in its entirety.

However, on 11 April, Hizbollah launched, for the second time, an unmanned aerial vehicle, or drone, across the Blue Line, violating Israeli airspace.

The rocket firing incident across the Blue Line into Israel in May, perpetrated by unidentified armed elements, carried significant potential for military escalation.

Lebanon wishes to maintain security and calm along the Blue Line and is working to spread stability and growth to the liberated regions.

Yet the Lebanese Government continues to condone Hizbullah operations launched from its territory, even those that show a complete disregard for the Blue Line.

Lastly, on 21 May, IDF opened small arms fire to ward off Lebanese shepherds who violated the Blue Line in the Shab'a farms area.

It should also be emphasized that the air activity from both sides poses a significant risk to UNIFIL helicopter patrols along the Blue Line.

My representatives in the region and I have continued to urge the parties to respect the Blue Line and to abide fully by their obligations.
