The Royal Norwegian Navy (Norwegian Sjøforsvaret, the naval defence (forces) ) is the branch of the Norwegian Armed Forces responsible for naval operations of the state of Norway.

The Naval Prefecture provides security in the port areas under its jurisdiction.

The various services intelligence directorates namely the Directorate of Military Intelligence (DMI), the Directorate of Air Intelligence (DAI), Directorate of Naval Intelligence (DNI) and some other agencies are involved also but their activity is smaller by comparison.

During the period 1509 1814, when Denmark was in a union with Norway, the Danish Navy was part of the Dano Norwegian Navy.

The modern, separate Royal Norwegian Navy was founded on April 12, 1814 by Prince Christian Fredrik.

The Royal Norwegian Air Force (RNoAF) was established by a royal decree on 1 November 1944, thereby merging the Army and Navy air forces.

During the cold war, the Royal Norwegian Navy was optimized for sea denial in coastal waters, in order to make an invasion from the sea as difficult and costly as possible.

In the subsequent stages of the Turkish War of Independence, due to the growing need for maritime shipping and the increase in the quantity and quality of the units and small ships, the organizational structure of the Directorate of Naval Affairs was gradually extended.
