The Emotional Clash of Civilizations

Sometimes equally good things clash.

The debate over the cartoons has been intense to the point that it is now tedious, ranging from freedom of expression to a clash of cultural values and even to a clash of civilizations.

Now, according to proponents of the clash of civilizations, Barbie and Fulla occupy these completely separate spheres.

Hamas also emerged as the moral victor after the latest but surely not the last military clash.

But, with the demise of communism, neo conservatism s two factions once again seemed fated to clash.

Moreover, the clash within Islam is likely to be destabilizing regionally and counterproductive to the interests of the free world.

Numerous memes and messages debated, challenged and disputed throughout the day.

If any proof of this clash of values were needed, it came in the form of a hugely impressive counter demonstration against the Shahbag movement led by activists of the fundamentalist Islamic movement Hifazat e Islam, which occupied the capital s Motijheel area.

Turkey also shows that the supposed clash between democracy and security and, indeed, between democracy and Islam can be reconciled.

These matters have been increasing in importance, and are inciting a clash between the political forces that have just come to power and their conservative opposition.

The clash with Lucca also concerned the possession of the castle of Montignoso and mainly the control of the , the main trade route between Rome and France.

Prosperity and liberty will be the victims, unless those who grasp the opportunities of the new world prevail.

All those initiatives can serve as instruments to eliminate misunderstandings among faiths and cultures and as an antidote to the notion of a clash of civilizations.

The issue is not free trade versus protectionism, but smart trade versus polarizing trade.

But that will be difficult, for transcending the emotional clash of civilizations presupposes an opening to the other that neither side may yet be ready to undertake.

But no matter how frequently we proclaim that all are born free and equal in dignity and rights, this clash of principles has not diminished.

And as a result of this convergence, this synthetic attempt to make sense of these two ideas together, there's a real possibility that, instead of a clash of Islamic civilization if there is such a thing and democratic civilization if there is such a thing we'll in fact have close compatibility.

It is the ideology of fear that incites fear and conflictive perceptions of other peoples, with the very harmful effects with which we are familiar, in relations among political, cultural and religious communities and which takes advantage of that fear and erroneous perceptions to achieve its ends.

Such a clash must be prevented. By confirming the Eastern Partnership agreements, the EU s leaders will demonstrate that they are not prepared to acquiesce in a new Yalta style division of the continent that would deprive these countries of their right to choose their own destiny.

Those who shut doors and build walls do not belong to the same family as those who welcome the needy in the name of higher values. The foundational principles of our democratic traditions are at stake principles that are being weakened by the clash itself.

The question is particularly relevant for Europe, but it also has global significance. In the Middle East, for example, identity politics is manifesting itself in its most sinister form a chaotic and violent clash between Sunni and Shia Muslims, exemplified by the rise of the Islamic State.

For radical Islamists (and some Westerners), the rise of Islam sets the scene for a clash of civilizations, which they welcome as a polarizing device that will allow them to recruit from the much larger Muslim mainstream.
