I pay a warm tribute to your predecessor, His Excellency Mr. Jean Ping, Minister of State and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and Francophonie of the Gabonese Republic.

I commend the Secretary General's leadership in that field, and would welcome thoughts on creating a focal point for the rule of law.

I would also like to compliment the outgoing President, Mr. Ping, on the exceptional work that he did during the previous session.

Here, I should like to commend the essential role played by the international community in the upturn in my country's political and economic situation.

Let me also commend Mr. Jean Ping for the able manner in which he conducted the work of the Assembly during his presidency.

I take this opportunity to commend all countries that continue to make contributions to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.

This is why I should like particularly and expressly to welcome the political courage of the leaders of the two sides regarding the successful withdrawal from Gaza and certain parts of the north of the West Bank.

In that connection, I wish to commend the parties for the commitment they continue to demonstrate to the Agreement on Cessation of Hostilities, signed in Algiers in June 2000.
