The Department of Safety and Security is responsible for providing leadership, operational support and oversight of the security management system to facilitate the safest and most efficient conduct of the programmes and activities of the United Nations system.

The projects on the strengthening of safety and security at Headquarters could certainly be integrated into any global access control system which the Secretary General might introduce.

UNICEF would interact fully with DSS, continuing to be an active member of the United Nations Security Management System.

UNIDO has established the Biosafety Information Network and Advisory Service and a computer based decision support system for the assessment of environmental impacts resulting from experimental and commercial releases of biotechnology derived products.

Immediate action to establish the Department of Safety and Security was taken by the appointment on 13 January 2005 of the Under Secretary General for Safety and Security, as well as the designation of officers in charge for the Division of Safety and Security Services and for the Division of Regional Operations.
