Since January 2005, the European Union has been funding a three year project with the Pesticide Action Network (PAN) to strengthen community health monitoring capabilities relevant to pesticide poisonings in six African countries.

For example, Sweden has halved its use of pesticides with hardly any reduction in crops.

Industrial agriculture is widely considered to impose social costs through pesticide pollution and nitrate pollution.

It also takes into consideration both direct and indirect damage by pests, so it includes weeds.

In this regard, note is taken of regional and sub regional initiatives to harmonize pesticide registration schemes.

Italy's offer is limited to hosting the part of the Secretariat that will deal with pesticide issues.

Clearly, those scourges could not be eliminated without broad, well planned and coordinated international cooperation.
