So you have the prefrontal cortex here, lighting up in red.

Three brain areas the hippocampus, the prefrontal cortex, and the amygdala are particularly susceptible to pathological changes in size and function.

Consideration for others is located in the prefrontal cortex.

The lobes of the brain most likely to be injured are the frontal and temporal lobes.

The frontal lobe contains most of the dopamine sensitive neurons in the cerebral cortex.

Similarly, there is evidence that the prefrontal cortex a key structure in emotional regulation as well as in decision making and working memory shrinks in major depression.

And you do that by measuring the relative activation of the left prefrontal cortex in the fMRI, versus the right prefrontal cortex.

We had this broad patch of area called the lateral prefrontal cortex that went way down in activity, and I'll summarize that for you here.

And so we had this focal area called the medial prefrontal cortex that went way up in activity.

It goes to the nucleus accumbens, all the way up to the prefrontal cortex, orbital frontal cortex, where decisions are made, high level.

Repeated stress causes neurons in the hippocampus and the prefrontal cortex to shrink and lose connections with other nerve cells, while it also causes neurons in the amygdala to grow and form new connections.

In red is an area that active in the prefrontal cortex, the frontal lobe of the brain, and in blue is this area that was deactivated.

And one of the main reasons our brain got so big is because it got a new part, called the frontal lobe. And particularly, a part called the pre frontal cortex.

The other one is the frontal lobe, which controls how we sustain attention, and another one is the anterior cingulate, which controls how we allocate and regulate attention and resolve conflict.

The orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) is a prefrontal cortex region in the frontal lobes in the brain which is involved in the cognitive processing of decision making.

Not so long ago, physical treatments such as lobotomy and ECT could be inflicted on patients without their consent, and sometimes for punitive purposes.

And when you're happy what we call positive valence you squirt dopamine into the prefrontal lobes, which makes you a breadth first problem solver you're more susceptible to interruption you do out of the box thinking.

In those individuals who avoid such thoughts, there is a related opposite type of pattern in which there is a decrease in the activation of the dorsal amgydala and the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex.

The other one is the frontal lobe, which controls how we sustain attention, and another one is the anterior cingulate, which controls how we allocate and regulate attention and resolve conflict.

Just very simply, the three parts of the brain the frontal lobe, where you focus your attention and concentration you have the temporal lobe, where you form images and keep memories and the posterior part of your brain, which contains the cerebellum, which controls motion and the brain stem, where you have your basic maintenance functions, like heartbeat and respiration.

Now, one recent discovery that has been made by researchers in Italy, in Parma, by Giacomo Rizzolatti and his colleagues, is a group of neurons called mirror neurons, which are on the front of the brain in the frontal lobes.

Egas Moniz, a Portuguese physician who developed the cerebral angiography and leucotomy, received in 1949 the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine he is the first Portuguese recipient of a Nobel Prize and the only in the sciences.

So what happens when we pay attention is that the prefrontal cortex, the sort of executive part of our brains, sends a signal that makes a little part of our brain much more flexible, more plastic, better at learning, and shuts down activity in all the rest of our brains.

And you see activity in some regions we've seen today, medial prefrontal cortex, dorsomedial, however, up here, ventromedial prefrontal cortex, anterior cingulate, an area that's involved in lots of types of conflict resolution, like if you're playing Simon Says, and also the right and left temporoparietal junction.

This area encircles the auditory cortex on the lateral sulcus the (part of the brain where the temporal lobe and parietal lobe meet).

But it is an extraordinary statement for a religious leader to make, because it sets to one side the question of the truth or falsehood, or the ethical value, of religious beliefs. Or rather all that wiring in the prefrontal cortex must be ethical, because it is good for survival.

There are two dorsal fins, no anal fin, and unusually for sharks, the lower lobe of the caudal fin is longer than the upper lobe.

The organs are governed by four central nerves from each side of the electric lobe, or specialized brain lobe, which is of a different color from the rest of the brain.
