Deep borehole drilling

A deep borehole with a hand pump can typically service about 300 people, with a monthly cost per household of about 2.25.

Though the Russians claim to have improved their operations, they continue to use the same borehole, which has already been contaminated with kerosene.

The fourth borehole drilling survey was launched by means of a contract signed in November 2004 in the framework of an open invitation for international tenders.

Provision is made for water supplied through pipes or by borehole to 50 premises at a monthly cost of 17,600 ( 105,600) and electricity charges estimated at 64,400 per month ( 386,400).

The most important activity undertaken during the reference period is the fourth borehole drilling survey in the Strait of Gibraltar, aimed at clarifying the geological uncertainties encountered in the central third of the layout.

Special attention will be given to the fourth borehole drilling survey, in progress at the time this report was prepared, and to updating the basic engineering and user traffic forecasting studies, in order to formulate the technical and financial feasibility appraisal.
