Some are already seizing the funding opportunities under what is essentially a climate change initiative to pursue broader sustainability goals.

(c) Pursuing financial policies that ensure sustainability and avoid discontinuities that are in practice prejudicial to the Millennium Development Goals.

These eight goals range from eradicating extreme poverty, providing universal primary education, and reducing health threats, to ensuring environmental sustainability.

(b) To enhance the contribution of forests to the achievement of the internationally agreed development goals, including the Millennium Development Goals, in particular with respect to poverty eradication and environmental sustainability

The capacity to innovate can be developed to contribute to the poverty reduction and sustainability targets of the Millennium Development Goals.

We identified six universal goals for sustainable development lives and livelihoods, food security, water sustainability, clean energy, healthy ecosystems, and good governance.

However, two overarching goals for decentralization are sustainability and equitable self determination.20 Under appropriate conditions, these can be mutually reinforcing outcomes.

Unlike the other goals, the target corresponding to MDG 7 (Ensure environmental sustainability) is not established in specific quantitative terms or with particular timelines.

The United Nations Millennium Development Goals set ambitious targets for lowering poverty, improving health and nutrition, expanding education, increasing gender equality, and ensuring environmental sustainability.

Ministers and Government Representatives also reaffirm their commitment to achieving the United Nations Millennium Development Goals, in particular the goals to halve the proportion of people living in extreme poverty and to achieve environmental sustainability by 2015.

Rather than focusing solely on income, sustainable development encourages cities, countries, and the world to focus simultaneously on three goals economic prosperity, social inclusion, and environmental sustainability.

Human rights, gender equality, sexual and reproductive health and rights, environmental sustainability and education are cross cutting issues contributing to the realization of the Millennium Development Goals.

But sustainability is also a call to action, a task in progress or journey and therefore a political process, so some definitions set out common goals and values.

Reducing road traffic injuries is important to the successful achievement of several of the Millennium Development Goals, particularly those related to poverty, child mortality reduction and environmental sustainability.

Of no less significance are the dimensions of sustainability of achievements of the Millennium Development Goals and of ensuring an enabling environment for medium and long term development.

If those goals are to be achieved in a sustainable manner, recognition that environmental sustainability underpins their achievement must be at the heart of further efforts of the international community.

Any approach to the issue must continue to explore the problem of our countries' external debt, linking the important concept of debt sustainability not only to the attainment of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), but also to the MDGs plus , or additional millennium development goals.

Beyond the Millennium Development Goals, the long term sustainability of debt depends on the growth and export prospects of debtor countries and, hence, on their success in overcoming structural development problems.

Section II examines the linkages between sustainable forest management and the achievement of the internationally agreed development goals relating to poverty eradication, health, environmental sustainability, consumption and production patterns and energy.

However, on the other hand, the outcome document fails to appreciate how much we still have to do to achieve environmental sustainability and, indeed, all the other Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

To move forward, we should redefine debt sustainability as the level of debt that allows a country to achieve the Millennium Development Goals and reach 2015 without an increase in debt ratios.

It sets out a number of time bound and measurable goals for the eradication of extreme poverty and hunger, universal primary education, gender equality, health, environmental sustainability and a global partnership for development.

One of the major development goals is to ensure environmental sustainability, particularly by integrating the principles of sustainable development into country policies and programmes, so as to reverse the loss of environmental resources.

While the Millennium Development Goals set out to promote gender equality, education, social inclusion and environmental sustainability, they focus primarily on people's material needs, including income poverty, hunger, disease, and provision of shelter.

36. We stress that in assessing debt sustainability criteria, consideration be given to allowing a country to achieve its national development goals, including the MDGs in 2015, without an increase in its debt ratios.

What should the private sector do better? While there are many examples of responsible companies that want to do well by doing good, sustainability and development goals are not always integrated into businesses core agenda.

The project also seeks to create a methodological plan for achieving the Goals at the local level, through the study and strengthening of local capacities, in order to ensure the sustainability of any action undertaken.
