8. Supports the efforts of Caribbean countries to implement sustainable fisheries management programmes

Among the topics discussed was the very pertinent issue of fisheries and their contribution to sustainable development.

Marine litter (e.g. discarded fishing gear) could be one issue for strengthened cooperation between the FAO Regional Fishery Bodies and the UNEP Regional Seas Programme in various parts of the world.

As a result, these two industrial longline fisheries are among the eight lowest in terms of edible returns on investment for protein.

The sustainable fisheries draft resolution stands as an undertaking by the international community to review the impact of fishing activity on marine bed ecosystems.

Illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing continues to seriously undermine the contribution of responsible fisheries to sustainable development.

Economy by sector Fisheries and agriculture now account for about 2.4 of the GDP, down from approximately 25 in 1960, while still employing 9.9 of the labor force.

Many localities around the world have developed their own traditional types of fishing boats, adapted to use local materials suitable for boat building and to the specific requirements of the fisheries and sea conditions in their area.

What actions can be taken to address the impediments to the sustainable development of fisheries?

New Zealand is pleased to once again co sponsor both the omnibus oceans draft resolution and the sustainable fisheries draft resolution.

In particular, the catalytic choices for ten sectors from agriculture, fisheries, and forests to transport and buildings are as relevant to developing as they are to developed countries.

An independent assessment estimated that at least 5,110 people will be resettled from the reservoir and downstream area, and the dam is expected to lead to a significant change in the fishery.

A similar agreement has been concluded with FAO and the Institute of Marine Research in Norway for cooperation in, and co financing of, a project dealing with fisheries and living marine resources trawl assessments and management.

The Panel, therefore, finds that Saudi Arabia has not provided sufficient evidence to substantiate losses to its fisheries resources as a direct result of Iraq's invasion and occupation of Kuwait.

The contribution of fisheries to sustainable development relies on the continuing health of functioning, productive ecosystems.

The need to increase developing States' capacity in the field of sustainable management of fisheries was recognized by a number of delegations, which underlined the need for subsistence assistance, capacity building and transfer of technology for developing countries, in particular small island developing States.

Responsible international commerce is, without doubt, crucial to ensuring that fishing contributes to sustainable development.
