5. Requests the Office for Outer Space Affairs

The Director of the Office for Outer Space Affairs opened the Meeting.

The Office for Outer Space Affairs will brief the Committee on the proposed activities for 2006.

The work of the ad hoc expert group was supported by the Office for Outer Space Affairs.

For example, in response to the increasing commercialization of outer space, the Office for Outer Space Affairs should continue its yearly workshops on space law.

The Office for Outer Space Affairs invites other United Nations entities to join this effort.

16. Further agrees that the programme should report to and receive guidance from the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space through the Office for Outer Space Affairs.

It was also recommended that the Office for Outer Space Affairs continue to maintain and expand the existing Global Network for Space Technology and Disaster Management.

The monitoring of gorilla habitats in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is being carried out in cooperation with ESA, while awareness raising workshops for site managers are being organized in Latin America in cooperation with the National Commission on Space Activities of Argentina.

The participants expressed their appreciation to the Office for Outer Space Affairs for hosting the twenty fifth session of the Inter Agency Meeting.

The United Nations system was able to request data from it through the Office for Outer Space Affairs, which cooperated with the Charter.

Member States should be encouraged and supported by their partners or even by the Office for Outer Space Affairs to draft national legislation on space activity.

The Committee noted with satisfaction that the Secretariat had continued to enhance the International Space Information Service and the website of the Office for Outer Space Affairs (www.unoosa.org).

The Office for Outer Space Affairs has been providing training courses on satellite aided search and rescue since 1999.

In that regard, the Meeting agreed that the Office for Outer Space Affairs should clarify the matter with the executive secretariat of the Charter.

The Meeting agreed that the Office for Outer Space Affairs should explore the possibility of making the brochure available in the six official United Nations languages.

42. Also agrees that the Director of the Office for Outer Space Affairs should participate in the sessions of the Commission on Sustainable Development to raise awareness and promote the benefits of space science and technology for sustainable development

The Subcommittee noted with appreciation that the Directory of Education Opportunities in Space Law had been updated and would be made available on the website of the Office for Outer Space Affairs.

The Subcommittee noted with appreciation the efforts of the Office for Outer Space Affairs to build capacity in space law and commended its work on the Directory of Education Opportunities in Space Law, the publication of the Space Law Update and the organization of its workshops on space law.

Essentially, it presents our tentative definitions of terms such as outer space, outer space object and weapons in outer space.

In consultation with the Director of the Office of Outer Space Affairs, he had resolved to make an effort to use the current meeting to provide Committee members with a practical demonstration of the benefits of space technology in everyday life.

6. Recommends that States and international intergovernmental organizations should report to the Office for Outer Space Affairs on new developments relating to their practice in registering space objects.

The Meeting agreed that letters should be sent by the Director of the Office for Outer Space Affairs to heads of those entities that had not been participating.

Also at the 10th meeting, the Chairman of the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, the expert on telemedicine from Virginia Commonwealth University, and the Director of the Office of Outer Space Affairs made presentations (see A C.4 60 SR.10).

Report of the Inter Agency Meeting on Outer Space Activities on its twenty fifth session

The Committee expressed its appreciation to the Office for Outer Space Affairs for the excellent informational material provided on national space legislation and international treaties, as well as for the informative website concerning the work of the Committee and its subcommittees.

IISL will prepare, with the assistance of the Office for Outer Space Affairs, an update of its bibliography of IISL proceedings, covering the period 1996 2003.

The legal framework for a treaty on PAROS is set out in the Outer Space Treaty.

The fundamental legal instrument governing outer space activities, the OST, has loopholes with regards to the prevention of outer space weaponization, and no international consensus has been reached on how to address the serious challenges facing outer space.

The Subcommittee agreed that the Office for Outer Space Affairs should continue its efforts to coordinate the use of space technology in disaster management and to promote the use and applications of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS).

The Committee agreed that member States should regularly provide the Office for Outer Space Affairs with information on their national space legislation and policy in order for the Office to maintain an up to date database on that subject.

A representative of the Office for Outer Space Affairs briefed the Meeting on the Charter on Cooperation to Achieve the Coordinated Use of Space Facilities in the Event of Natural or Technological Disasters (International Charter Space and Major Disasters ).

Welcomes the fact that the Office for Outer Space Affairs could integrate into its programme of work a number of actions identified for implementation by the Office in the Plan of Action of the Committee for the further implementation of the recommendations of UNISPACE III

The Meeting invited the entities of the United Nations system to contribute to the unified list of space related training events for 2005, which is maintained by the Office for Outer Space Affairs.

The view was expressed that outer space must be protected from the threat posed by weapons in outer space.

Many questions have been raised, including a possible distinction between weaponization and militarization of outer space, and definitions of technical terms, such as  outer space , space weapon , space object and peaceful use of outer space .

This multilateral legal regime for outer space, however, bans only the introduction of weapons of mass destruction in outer space.

7. Expresses concern about the real danger of the weaponization of outer space, and calls upon all States to contribute actively to the objective of the peaceful use of outer space and of the prevention of an arms race in outer space
