Mr. Mackay (New Zealand) May I associate New Zealand with the expressions of condolence that have been made on the passing away of His Holiness Pope John Paul II and His Serene Highness, sovereign Prince Rainier III of Monaco.

Let me also express, on behalf of the Government and the people of Georgia, sincere gratitude for the condolences and sympathy offered in connection with the tragic death of His Excellency Mr. Zurab Zhvania, Prime Minister of Georgia.

Mr. Siosiua 'Utoikamanu (Tonga) At the outset, I take this opportunity to express Tonga's deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathy to the Government and people of the United States of America for the losses suffered in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina on the Gulf Coast.

Care giving, as illustrated by our case, includes what happens when hope and consolation are abandoned, when theodicy ends, and when all there is to do is to be present with the sufferer, sharing his or her suffering by simply and usually silently being there.

Most important, of course, is the need to prevent the suffering caused by the crimes that lead to international prosecutions and when those crimes cannot be prevented, we must provide some comfort and redress to the victims and their families by doing justice.
