Finally, I should like personally and on behalf of the people, Government and delegation of Burundi, to thank all those who, since the beginning of the tragedies that have repeatedly struck my country, have shown us tokens of their sympathy and have encouraged us to rise above and bear with dignity the harsh trials that have befallen us twice in less than six months.

Permit me, on behalf of my Prime Minister, and the Government and people of Saint Lucia, to express profound thanks and appreciation to the several members and agencies of our Organization for their expressions of sympathy, concern and support, and, in several cases, offers or tangible manifestations of assistance in our time of need.

Care giving, as illustrated by our case, includes what happens when hope and consolation are abandoned, when theodicy ends, and when all there is to do is to be present with the sufferer, sharing his or her suffering by simply and usually silently being there.

Most important, of course, is the need to prevent the suffering caused by the crimes that lead to international prosecutions and when those crimes cannot be prevented, we must provide some comfort and redress to the victims and their families by doing justice.
