In cooperation with the Department of Political Affairs, it has assisted the AU in developing the concepts for the emerging continental peace and security architecture, including the African Standby Force.

The Department of Peacekeeping Operations and the Department of Political Affairs have agreed to provide capacity building support through a staff exchange programme with African regional organizations.

Training for humanitarian personnel and peacekeepers has been conducted in collaboration with United Nations country teams, mainly in sub Saharan Africa.

Africa is known for the great diversity of its peoples and if it is not to create the conditions for conflict and intolerance instead of promoting a culture of peaceful coexistence, it needs to ensure inclusive involvement not only in society's institutions but also in the decision making processes relating to public governance.

The programme, Legal affairs, is implemented by the Office of Legal Affairs.

On the Government of the Sudan side, the missions included representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, the Ministry of Justice and the Humanitarian Affairs Commission.

In October 2004, the customs expert of the Monitoring Group addressed a meeting of regional customs intelligence national contact persons for East and Southern African countries, drawing attention to the United Nations arms embargo.

Moreover, in February 2001, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mali, with the support of France and Canada, had organized an international seminar in Bamako in order to promote awareness in African countries of the Ottawa Convention and to promote its ratification.

The Department of Economic and Social Affairs has coordinated the Africa Governance Inventory, a flexible management tool assisting African Governments and their development partners to improve programming, coordination, monitoring, evaluation and mobilization of resources in governance.
