But from about the age of five, I was aware that I didn't fit.

I am an Indian and a Muslim and proud to be both.

So I said to myself, with all these hundred other boys, this is where I belong.

As a clergyman, you can imagine how out of place I feel.

This is lifetime commitment to feel useful to the society to which I belong.

I come from a country with a long tradition of seafaring, of looking over the horizon.

I have in mind the two countries of which I am a citizen (Italy and Malta), where the media situation is an absolute disaster.

But in a poor country like the one I come from, Sierra Leone, even half a dollar can save a life or feed an entire family.

I was of the generation in my country that lived through the transition from dictatorship to democracy four decades ago.

Perhaps because Spain played more beautiful football. Or perhaps it just shows my age.

My generation is particularly fortunate, because we have a chance to relate to other young people from all over the world.

In the life of individuals as well as of institutions, the completion of 60 years is a significant moment for stocktaking certainly in my part of the world.

I suppose that I belong to an expat generation that has not been educated to consider voting an essential right, if not a duty, and I regret that.
