Work should continue on the use of available space technology to strengthen and link existing regional early warning systems.

That delegation noted that terrestrial launches were made with NPS systems already on board and that the work of the Working Group on the Use of Nuclear Power Sources in Outer Space should lead to the establishment of standards and norms for the use of NPS in space.

That document recognized the importance of space based Earth observations, remote sensing, GIS and telecommunications to assess, monitor, model and forecast natural hazards and risks and to enhance early warning systems.

The importance of the civil and commercial use of outer space, as well as the dependence of highly industrialized societies on systems based in outer space, especially in the spheres of communication, navigation, environmental protection, weather forecasting and monitoring, is growing.
