We were led by our fears.

In our fears, the characters are us.

Our fears provoke in us a very similar form of suspense.

Nor is our fear limited to oil.

And sometimes, of course, our worst fears do come true.

In other words, our fears make us think about the future.

Once in a while, our fears can predict the future.

Action gives us a sense of control, and helps us bear our fear.

And our fears led to a blind faith in the orthodoxy of austerity.

Now, some of us naturally read our fears more closely than others.

But we can't possibly prepare for all of the fears that our imaginations concoct.

When our fears are unbounded and overblown, we're reckless, and we're cowardly.

I'm convinced now that we were unduly concerned about the possibility of a ghost haunting it.

Numerous other countries, notably European Union members, share our concerns.

It's believing in those dreams and facing our fears head on that allows us to live our lives beyond our limits.

We know how fear feels, but I'm not sure we spend enough time thinking about what our fears mean.

Just as the most nuanced stories in literature are often the richest, so too might our subtlest fears be the truest.

So my recommendation, to wrap up, is that what we really need to do is we need to recognize where our fears come from,

And like our phobias and our choices about which animals to eat, there may be no rational basis for this, and this has gotten to the point where our fears are so tainted by this exposure to the media, that the top five things parents are worried about in regards to their children and you'll notice ninjas aren't on here (Laughter) do not overlap at all with the five things that children in America are actually dying of.

Our well founded fears are heightened by the continuously growing gap between the developed and developing countries.

Our fears also tend to contain imagery that can be every bit as vivid as what you might find in the pages of a novel.

And there were no superficial conversations as we shared our innermost thoughts, our fears, and our hopes for life after the spinal ward.

We're using the kind of skills that I've outlined inner power the development of inner power through self knowledge, recognizing and working with our fear, using anger as a fuel, cooperating with others, banding together with others, courage, and most importantly, commitment to active non violence.

Read in the right way, our fears are an amazing gift of the imagination, a kind of everyday clairvoyance, a way of glimpsing what might be the future when there's still time to influence how that future will play out.

So if we think of our fears as more than just fears but as stories, we should think of ourselves as the authors of those stories.

And maybe if we all tried to read our fears, we too would be less often swayed by the most salacious among them.

We all share collective responsibility to address those common concerns, allay our fears and reduce our nightmares, both now and in the future.

Properly read, our fears can offer us something as precious as our favorite works of literature a little wisdom, a bit of insight and a version of that most elusive thing the truth.

We should, for example, want to prevent the militarization of nuclear energy in Iran precisely because of our concern as Europeans, not because we are allies of the US.

But our latest nuclear fears have broader implications, especially for energy supply and our desire to shift away from reliance on fossil fuels.

We are told not to worry about large scale cyber meltdowns, because none has occurred, and governments are being vigilant.

My call to action today is that we need to get over our fear of how extraordinarily powerful we can be in each other's lives.

Nevertheless, they find that many of our biggest concerns will turn out to be trivial, or even beneficial.

Today, oil is the most important and valuable internationally traded commodity, and its significance to our civilization is underscored by the recurrent worry that we are running out of it.
