The Committee welcomes the establishment in 1995 of the Office of the Ombudsman.

Creation of two posts of Treasury Assistant (General Service (Other level))

The provision for the proposed Office of the Ombudsperson proposed is also part of this budget component.

I think that Mr. Søren Jessen Petersen, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary General, is doing very good work in Kosovo on this specific matter.

The Committee welcomes the establishment of Ombudsperson institutions in the Republic of Montenegro and in the autonomous province of Vojvodina, as well as the current process of adopting a law on the Ombudsperson of Serbia.

The Committee was informed that these posts, which previously had been placed under the Division of Assessment and Early Warning, were for the Secretary of the Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation and support staff.

The Committee notes with interest the existence of special courts to settle conflicts in accordance with the traditions and customs of indigenous peoples, as well as the post of Special Ombudsman on Indigenous Issues.
