In October, UNMIL organized a four day workshop for legal aid providers to help build the capacity of private defence lawyers, which was aimed at reducing the number of pre trial detentions and violations of the rights of defendants.

Such detentions should be considered as impediments to humanitarian assistance, and are unacceptable.

Continuing reports of detentions and the absence of adequate arrangements for due process are issues that also need to be addressed.

These detentions have normally been on specious grounds, and have followed attempts by non governmental organizations to document the rapes of internally displaced persons, to follow up on protection incidents, or provide humanitarian assistance in SLA areas.
