Apps and Windows Phone Store App framework Apps for Windows Phone 8.1 can now be created using the same application model as Store apps for Windows 8.1, based on the Windows Runtime, and the file extension for WP apps is now .appx (which is used for Windows Store apps), instead of Windows Phone's traditional .xap file format.

Vista also features new graphics features, the Windows Aero GUI, new applications (such as Windows Calendar, Windows DVD Maker and some new games including Chess, Mahjong, and Purble Place), Internet Explorer 7, Windows Media Player 11, and a large number of underlying architectural changes.

Much of the popularity for Windows 2.0 came by way of its inclusion as a run time version with Microsoft's new graphical applications, Excel and Word for Windows.

While OS 2 continued to run Windows 3.1 applications, it lacked support for anything but the Win32s subset of Win32 API (see above).

RxSock for network communication as well as other add ons to and implementations of Regina Rexx have been developed, and a Rexx interpreter for the Windows command line is supplied in most Resource Kits for various versions of Windows and works under all of them as well as MS DOS.

User applications, including the Windows Shell, are then started with the restricted token, resulting in a reduced privilege environment even under an Administrator account.

Out of the major applications, only the CDR is still on a Windows NT platform, and work is under way to upgrade its environment and to provide additional features.
