So these images are the work of my friend and colleague, Mark Boyer, who is here in the audience today.

In the early years of the period, the Second Boer War in South Africa split the country into anti and pro war factions.

Boyer, however, responding to a party on the east that preferred Haiti over Colombia, occupied the ex Spanish colony in January 1822, encountering no military resistance.

In 1976 Genentech, the first genetic engineering company, was founded by Herbert Boyer and Robert Swanson and a year later the company produced a human protein (somatostatin) in E.coli .

From 1824 to 1826, while the island was under one government, Boyer promoted the largest single free Black immigration from the United States in which more than 6000 immigrants settled in different parts of the island.

Beginning with the lab of Paul Berg in 1972 (aided by EcoRI from Herbert Boyer's lab, building on work with ligase by Arthur Kornberg's lab), molecular biologists put these pieces together to produce the first transgenic organisms.

And so DNA didn't become a useful molecule, and the lawyers didn't enter into the equation until 1973, 20 years later, when Boyer and Cohen in San Francisco and Stanford came up with their method of recombinant DNA, and Stanford patented it and made a lot of money.
