The 1981 floods ruined entire crop fields and caused permanent damage to many villages in the area.

A programme to train community based Village Health Workers was established and the primary health care approach continues to be expanded to respond to the demands of rapid urbanization resulting in over crowding of outpatients' facilities at the hospitals in Port Vila and Santo.

In the first years of the conflict, the tragedy and terrorism committed by Armenians against the Azerbaijani population of Karabakh in the villages of Kerkijahan, Mesheli, Koushjular, Karadaghly and Aghdaban, and finally the Khodjaly genocide, are the historical stigma of the suffering and miserable Armenians.
