The existing training capacity at Headquarters and at offices away from Headquarters is also under examination.

The Institute's training programmes for capacity building are further reinforced by information exchange, technical cooperation, advocacy and publications.

Provisions for non post objects of expenditure also reflect slight increases mainly to strengthen the training capacity under this subprogramme.

The limited number of MINUSTAH police personnel, particularly French speaking officers, has hampered the pace of the Mission's training and capacity building programmes.

In compliance with its terms of reference, since 2002 the Protection Information Section has developed a traineeship programme aiming at contributing to in house and external capacity building initiatives by assisting in the establishment and development of information capabilities.

UNESCO also initiated a capacity development programme that included a series of training workshops providing technical guidance and counselling for students in four selected girls' schools in the West Bank.

Trainings

Given the many actors involved in training, capacity building and public awareness, the secretariat is taking a more strategic approach to its contributions to training workshops and side events.

We also wish to recognize the work of the Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea, especially its support in the consultation process and its training programmes, which are particularly helpful to the capacity building of developing countries.

Mr. Sach (Controller) confirmed that the purpose of the training programmes for the Mission's national staff was to enhance their ability to perform job related functions within the Mission and to contribute to national capacity building.

Five trainers facilitated the workshop.

The Director extended his appreciation to all current and former members of the Commission who significantly contributed to the preparation of the training material and the delivery of the training course.

Since local capacity would not always be available, UNMIS should step up the implementation of training programmes for suitable candidates from among former combatants, in accordance with the Secretary General's progress report to the Security Council (S 2005 579).

A DVD entitled Lessons in Peacemaking has been produced as well and is being shown as part of the training material for the Institute's other training programmes.

As host to the workshop, the Government of the Republic of Korea, through the Korea Energy Economics Institute, also provided financial and excellent logistical support to the workshop.

There was also a comment that the trainers could have used simple models adapted to African circumstances.

A mock inspection was conducted as part of the course.

The Commission is grateful to the British Government for its support for this training course.

The group continued to provide technical advice to Parties on improving their national communications through the effective organization of four hands on training workshops and examination of national communications of non Annex I Parties.

10. Requests the Secretary General, in consultation with the Institute and United Nations funds and programmes, to continue to explore ways and means of systematically utilizing the Institute in the execution of training and capacity building programmes for the economic and social development of developing countries

Notes with appreciation the voluntary financial and other contributions received for capacity building and technical cooperation, and invites all member States to assist UNCTAD on a voluntary basis in its technical cooperation by providing experts, training facilities or resources

The training needs assessment also helped to identify the strategic training needs of the various ministries and universities with a view to providing them with training activities and eventually technical assistance.

As in the case of the training course in Fiji, participation in the forthcoming training courses would be open to the technical staff of the developing States of the specific region.

The Board also reviewed the implementation of training programmes in the field of protection.
