With respect to the sections entitled Freedom from want and Freedom from fear, on security and development, we strongly believe that there is a nexus between development and our common security.

Two values in particular should be mentioned. These are freedom and solidarity freedom in all its aspects, as skilfully described by the Secretary General as freedom from want, freedom from fear and freedom to live in dignity.

The first part of the report, entitled Freedom from Want , proposes specific decisions for implementing the bargain struck three years ago in Monterrey between developed and developing countries.

Having endured the horrors of war for decades, Chad knows better than any other country the need to live free from want through economic and social development, which is in turn a product of peace and security.

They must also be free from want  so that the death sentences of extreme poverty and infectious disease are lifted from their lives and free from fear so that their lives and livelihoods are not ripped apart by violence and war.

In the twenty first century, all States and their collective institutions must advance the cause of larger freedom by ensuring freedom from want, freedom from fear and freedom to live in dignity.

The Republic of Yemen stresses the importance of implementing the MDGs adopted in 2000, as well as the Monterrey Consensus and the outcome of the Johannesburg Summit, in order to free humankind from want, poverty and disease.

In order not to repeat what has already been said by a number of my colleagues, I would just like to reiterate that Turkey also fully shares the vision and strategy of the Secretary General with respect to what he has so eloquently termed freedom from want .

Convinced that the three categories of freedom, namely, freedom from want, freedom from fear and freedom to live in dignity, are essential for both developed and developing societies and indispensable for the peace and stability of the world,

The United Nations Development Programme's 1994 Human Development Report is considered a milestone publication in the field of human security, with its argument that insuring freedom from want and freedom from fear for all persons is the best path to tackle the problem of global insecurity.

The informal interactive hearings session Freedom from want segment on Millennium Development Goal 8 and on issues regarding financing for development was held on 23 June 2005 at United Nations Headquarters in New York.

In his recently released report, In larger freedom towards development, security and human rights for all , the UN Secretary General writes that every human being should be free from want and describes extreme poverty as poverty that kills.

It is therefore important that we focus on the issue under the heading Freedom from want as a matter of priority, recognizing that the overwhelming number of people in the world still live in poverty and are in want of the basic human needs for their existence.

In this regard, we are grateful to him for his observation that, in the twenty first century, States and their collective institutions must advance the cause of larger freedom by ensuring freedom from want, freedom from fear and freedom to live in dignity.

In connection with the report's proposals grouped under the subject of freedom from want , the Government of El Salvador reaffirms its commitment and political will to implement the pledges it made at the International Conference on Financing for Development and at the World Summit on Sustainable Development.

For instance, the concepts of freedom from want , freedom from fear and freedom to live in dignity have been enshrined in many religious philosophies as noble pursuits, and emulating those age old concepts in our efforts could act as a catalyst.

Up to now nine have been slaughtered, and there are dozens being pushed in the direction of certain death, in return for a few dirhams that poverty drives them to seize. They become unfortunate victims, and their families are ignored or given insignificant compensation like it was a gift.

In that context, AOSIS appreciates the focus in the report on the urgent need for comprehensive and global action on implementation, and the general references to small island developing States, particularly in its chapter on freedom from want, in which it makes reference to trade and climate change.

11. We will spare no effort to free our fellow men, women and children from the abject and dehumanizing conditions of extreme poverty, to which more than a billion of them are currently subjected. We are committed to making the right to development a reality for everyone and to freeing the entire human race from want.

First, on development, which is clustered under the theme freedom from want , no issue deserves closer attention than the hardship faced by many hundreds of millions living in extreme poverty and destitution in many parts of the world, particularly in sub Saharan Africa.
