The Programme represents an innovative collaboration that derives its strength from WHO experience in analysing armed violence and UNDP operational strengths in sectors relevant to violence prevention at the country level.

A campaign to combat sexual violence and abuse against women in situations of armed conflict was to mark the five year anniversary of Security Council resolution 1325 (2000).

Regular calls and rallies for peace and harmony have been continually organized asking all parties to be more patient and to refrain from both sexual and armed violence.

The optimism generated by the resolution of the conflict in southern Sudan has been dampened, however, by continuing violence in Darfur, where more than 1.6 million people have fled their homes since the beginning of armed conflict.

Special attention must be paid to the specific protection needs of women and girls to prevent gender based violence, particularly rape and other forms of sexual abuse, in situations of armed conflict.

Governments must take advantage of non violent alternatives to armed action and provide a strong international system that includes laws, courts, and international police, with the assistance of experts within civil society, in particular women.

That will contribute to the development of a database of evidence on effective ways to prevent armed violence, and will eventually enhance the capacity to develop strategies to reduce the demand for small arms.
