While commodity prices are always more variable than those for manufactured goods and services, commodity markets over the last five years have seen extraordinary, almost unprecedented, volatility.

That requires a weaker dollar to make US goods more attractive to foreign buyers and to make foreign goods more expensive to American consumers.

Moreover, the goods that are easiest to buy are those that are easy to post as collateral houses and cars, rather than perishables.

But domestic demand did not call for the same goods, and the goods that were locally demanded were already in short supply before the crisis.
