The representative of Rotary International expressed appreciation for the continued support of UNICEF to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative.

He also indicated Rotary's availability to support other initiatives aimed at achieving the Millennium Development Goals.

Rather than wait for politicians to take up the fight against polio, Rotarians led the way.

Efforts by the Rotary Club, the World Health Organization, and many others have reduced polio by 99 worldwide since 1979.

More importantly, Rotary s leadership on polio offers a more general lesson in the fight against extreme poverty, hunger, and disease.

As of the mid 1980 s, there were more than 300,000 cases of polio per year worldwide, despite the disease s virtual elimination in the richest countries, where vaccination was routine.

Red Cross chapters across Africa, in partnership with other organizations, are now distributing bed nets free of charge to impoverished families, in the same way that Rotary has been distributing polio vaccines.

Indeed, Article 22 of that charter reveals that Hamas views the Jews (together with the Freemasons and other nefarious organizations like Rotary International and the Lions Club), as responsible for the French and Bolshevik Revolutions, World War I, and World War II.

Fortunately, the American Red Cross and other organizations have been following the Rotary model, using private donations and private volunteers to fill the gap left by our political leaders.

The United Nations Foundation, Rotary International and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria were the top three contributors to UNICEF in this group, followed by GAVI and the Micronutrient Initiative.

In her introductory remarks, the Executive Director expressed appreciation for the tireless support of Rotary, both to fund UNICEF supported programmes and to advocate for the political commitment of donor Governments and affected countries.

Interventions were made by the representative of Tunisia and the observers for the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Mauritania, Iraq and Ecuador, as well as the representative of Rotary International, a non governmental organization and a representative of civil society, from New York University.

A few years later, the World Health Organization, and then other international agencies and donor countries, joined the cause, creating a coalition of official and private organizations that now support Rotary s vision.

The Panel also received useful cooperation from a number of private enterprises, such as the Rotary Club of Monrovia, the Oriental Timber Company, Lonestar Communications Corporation, CellCom, Mano River Resources and Rudolph Merab (President of the Liberian Timber Association).

The Global Polio Eradication Initiative, led by CDC, Rotary International, UNICEF and WHO, saw an almost 50 per cent decline in the number of reported cases in 2004 in Asia.

The Gates Foundation, UNICEF, Rotary International, and many governments have succeeded in bringing down polio deaths to one thousandth of the rate a generation ago, bringing the disease to the verge of eradication.

In the first few decades of the 20th century, several volunteer organizations were founded, including the Rotary International, Kiwanis International, Association of Junior Leagues International, and Lions Clubs International.

The Executive Director introduced the report (E ICEF 2005 P L.37) in which the Board was requested to approve a five year extension of the cooperation with the Polio Plus Programme of Rotary International, and the extension of the Vaccine Independence Initiative for the period 2006 2010.
