Muslims cover 25.5 of the population of Brussels, 4.0 of Wallonia and 3.9 of Flanders.

The eradication of poppy fields should be seen in this larger context.

Putting pressure on the poppy farmers in Afghanistan alone will not solve the problem.

The States of Brabant and of Flanders lost their representation after 1587 as most of their territory had been conquered by the Army of Flanders, and it was not restored after part of that territory (together with parts of the Duchy of Limburg) was reconquered by the Dutch Republic.

If active intervention on law enforcement coupled with effective alternative livelihoods assistance is not provided on an urgent basis, they may return to cultivating poppy.

With particular regard to Afghanistan, mercenaries fell into several categories, including those working for private companies, those in the pay of warlords, and those involved in drug trafficking in the highly lucrative illegal poppy cultivation market.

The rates in Brussels are higher than the national average (1.79 in 1997, 1.93 in 2002 and 2.09 in 2007), while they are below the average in Flanders (1.54 in 1997, 1.56 in 2002 and 1.77 in 2007), due to Brussels having relatively more Muslims and Africans and Flanders relatively fewer.
