Large quantities of sulphur dioxide are emitted in the air because lubricants are in use for heating.

The unspent balance was due primarily to lower requirements than budgeted for spare parts, petrol, oil and lubricants and liability insurance.

Provision for naval transportation is made for the acquisitions of three patrol boats to be used by civilian police, liability insurance and spare parts, as well as for petrol, oil and lubricants.

Owing to the downsizing of the force, UNAMSIL required only 9,609 flying hours, with related reduced requirements for petrol, oil, lubricants and liability insurance charges.

Reduced requirements for petrol, oil and lubricants and liability insurance were due mainly to the repatriation of some contingent owned vehicles, resulting from the downsizing of the Mission, and the delayed arrival of replacement vehicles.

Provision is made for the purchase of 85,600 litres of petrol at 0.4874 per litre and 719,000 litres of diesel at 0.2235 per litre for use in the operation of motor vehicles ( 202,400) and for oil and lubricants ( 20,200).

The provision also reflects requirements for the rental of vehicles pending acquisition of new vehicles, repairs and maintenance, liability insurance, spare parts and petrol, oil and lubricants necessary for the operation and maintenance of all vehicles and 10 workshops throughout the Mission area.
