The African continent has benefited from the Agency's capacity building in applying SIT for the eradication of tsetse flies and other pests.

In the tsetse fly, the trypanosomes will be found... in the gut, mouth parts, and salivary glands... in all of which sites they multiply.

The highest death rates were in East Africa, where in 1916 alone deaths of the original mounts and remounts accounted for 290 of the initial stock numbers, mainly due to infection from the tsetse fly.

The Agency's support through the African Union's Pan African Tsetse and Trypanosomiasis Eradication Campaign is happily yielding results, and Africa has begun to take effective ownership of the programme.

In the field of food production, the Agency is promoting the use of the so called sterile insect technique, which relies on the release of large numbers of radiation sterilized male insects to mate with fertile females, thereby gradually reducing the population of, for instance, tsetse flies and Mediterranean fruit flies.
