Some participants found that these issues were not given sufficient emphasis in the draft outcome document.

His delegation also regretted that the Outcome touched only briefly on trade issues.

Participants recommended greater attention in the outcome document to the issues of water, sanitation and human settlements.

It was recommended that the rights of persons with disabilities and the need to engage them in development strategies be addressed in the outcome document.

Human rights must be elevated within the United Nations and given a prominent place in the outcome document.

Participants proposed that the outcome document call for universal access to health care services.

It was regrettable that the Summit Outcome did not contain wide ranging recommendations on the development of international trade.

Having considered the Final Communique of the Fourth Islamic Conference of Cultural Ministers (ICCM) held in Algiers, Algeria, 15 16 December, 2004

There was the US government s eleventh hour decision to table hundreds of objections to the final Summit Declaration, effectively reducing it to a series of lowest common denominator platitudes.

That belief was behind China s pressure on Cambodia to block ASEAN s final communiqué this summer.

The hope was expressed that the outcome document would recognize the important contribution the private sector can make to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.

The general assembly adopted the final statement of the forum in which it called Estonian women to come out and vote at the referendum on the European Union.

The Outcome of the Summit presented few new ideas or commitments to genuine common action by the international community.

Many participants said that the draft outcome document should be strengthened and provide a clear and concrete road map for the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.

The outcome document should include strategies to strengthen their abilities to develop and implement development strategies and monitor progress towards the achievement of the Goals.

There was a strong feeling that the outcome document should give greater attention to disarmament and call for a new legal instrument to control the arms trade.

Kimberley Process Plenary Meeting

In 2005, at the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, Vladimir Putin pressed for the final declaration to include a demand for withdrawal of American bases from Central Asia.

In my capacity as the representative of the country which hosted Quartet Ministerial meeting of the Middle East Peace Process international intermediaries I have the honour to transmit to you its final statement.

There were also calls for the outcome document to acknowledge that youth can be creative agents of change when they are effectively engaged in developing, implementing and monitoring development strategies.

Mr. Chidyausiku (Zimbabwe) said that, while the 2005 World Summit Outcome could be used to guide the Committee's work, it fell short of expectations on several fronts.

His delegation was pleased that the Outcome recognized the critical role of rural and agricultural development in fighting poverty, hunger and malnutrition and strengthening the economies of developing countries.

It was felt that the outcome document should give greater attention to the need to enhance democracy and accountability in international decision making, including through increasing participation of developing countries.

They called for the outcome document to endorse the plan of action of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and to include an explicit reference to the doubling of the Office's regular budget resources within five years and an increase in its voluntary funding.

Mr. Alimov (Tajikistan) said that, while the Summit Outcome was not a reflection of the aspirations of the poor and very poor nations, it would mobilize and stimulate efforts worldwide to achieve the Millennium Development Goals.

It would be the Committee's task to follow up the decisions relating to development in the Outcome of the High level Plenary Meeting, which included useful agreements on quick impact initiatives, rural development, health, education and employment.

North Korea s Endgame

Mr. Loizaga (Paraguay) said that the Committee should give particular attention to the Millennium Development Goals in order to compensate for the lack of greater commitments in the 2005 World Summit Outcome, which represented the most recent commitment on their achievement.
