Mr. Carl August FLEISCHHAUER (Germany),

Auguste Nélaton (17 June 1807 21 September 1873) was a French physician and surgeon.

Friedrich Leopold August Weismann (17 January 1834 5 November 1914) was a German evolutionary biologist.

Dr. Carl August Fleischhauer, Mr. Hans Corell and Mr. Jean Pierre Levy similarly deserve our recognition.

Under Secretaries General Hans Corell, Judge Carl August Fleischhauer and Mr. Jean Pierre Levy deserve our recognition.

Before turning to other matters, I should like to pay tribute to Mr. Carl August Fleischhauer, the Legal Counsel of the United Nations, for his outstanding work.

I also wish to express our sincere gratitude to Mr. Hans Corell, Under Secretary General and Legal Counsel of the United Nations, and his predecessor Judge Carl August Fleischhauer.

In the early nineteenth century, Thomas Young and August Fresnel clearly demonstrated the interference and diffraction of light and by 1850 wave models were generally accepted.

The PRESIDENT The following three candidates have obtained an absolute majority in the Assembly Mr. Carl August Fleischhauer, Mr. Shigeru Oda and Mr. Jiuyong Shi.

Karl August Fagerholm (31 December 1901, Siuntio 22 May 1984, Helsinki) was Speaker of Parliament and three times Prime Minister of Finland (1948 50, 1956 57, and 1958).

Mr. MOTOMURA (Japan) First of all, I should like to express my delegation apos s sincere gratitude to the Legal Counsel and Under Secretary General for Legal Affairs, Mr. Carl August Fleischhauer, and his staff at the Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea.

A word of special recognition is due to Mr. Carl August Fleischhauer, Under Secretary General for Legal Affairs, and to Mr. Jean Pierre Levy, Director of the Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea, for the very competent role they have been playing in the process.

I also wish to express the most sincere gratitude of the Austrian delegation to the former Legal Counsel of the United Nations, Judge Carl August Fleischhauer, and his successor Under Secretary General Hans Corell, for so ably conducting these often quite difficult consultations.

Our thanks for this go to the Secretary General, Mr. Boutros Boutros Ghali, and his predecessor to the Legal Counsel, Mr. Hans Corell, and his predecessor, Mr. Carl August Fleischhauer as well as to the Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea.

Before concluding, I must express my gratitude to the Legal Counsel of the United Nations, Mr. Carl August Fleischhauer, for the great amount of work he has done, and I again congratulate him on his election to the International Court of Justice.

We should particularly like to express the Australian Government apos s appreciation to the outgoing Under Secretary General for Legal Affairs, Mr. Carl August Fleischhauer, for his excellent work on law of the sea matters, as well as to congratulate him on his highly deserved election to the International Court of Justice.

The names of the three candidates who have already obtained an absolute majority of votes, Mr. Carl August Fleischhauer, Mr. Shigeru Oda, Mr. Shi Jiuyong, and the names of the two candidates who have withdrawn their candidatures, Mr. Francis Ssekandi and Mr. Volodymyr Vassylenko, have been deleted from the ballot paper.

Finally, I cannot fail to welcome the participation in the Court of the three new judges elected during the previous session of the General Assembly by the Assembly and the Security Council Mr. Abdul Koroma, Mr. Carl August Fleischhauer and Mr. Shi Jiuyong respectively.

I should like, in particular, to thank the Legal Counsel, Mr. Carl August Fleischhauer, and to express my deepest gratitude to the Secretary of the Committee, Ms. Jacqueline Dauchy, as well as to the Deputy Secretary, Mr. Andronico O. Adede, and to all staff of the Codification Division, which provided such dedicated service to the Committee.

At the same meeting, the following five candidates received the required majority of votes in the Security Council Mr. Carl August Fleischhauer (Germany), Mr. Shigeru Oda (Japan), Mr. Jiuyong Shi (China), Mr. Geza Herczegh (Hungary) and Mr. José Luis Jesus (Cape Verde).

This is not an insurmountable task on the contrary, I would say that we have patiently built up trust and good will during the consultations on the law of the sea, thanks to the effective work of the Secretary General and of Mr. Carl August Fleischhauer, Legal Counsel of the United Nations.

As Mr. Carl August Fleischhauer, Mr. Shigeru Oda, Mr. Jiuyong Shi and Mr. Geza Herczegh also received the required majority of votes in the General Assembly, they were declared elected members of the International Court of Justice for a term of office of nine years, beginning on 6 February 1994.

In 1863, Peter II, who had ruled since the death of his father Augustus in 1853, seemed inclined to press a claim to the vacant duchy of Schleswig and duchy of Holstein, but ultimately in 1867 he abandoned this in favor of the Kingdom of Prussia and received some slight compensation.
