The climate of Western Alaska is determined in large part by the Bering Sea and the Gulf of Alaska.

Other gateways are the Barents Sea Opening (BSO), the Bering Strait and various small channels in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago.

The usual theory of the settlement of the Americas is that earliest ancestors of the peoples of the Americas came from Eurasia over a land bridge which connected the two continents across what is now the Bering Strait during a period of glaciation, when the sea water level was lower.

They were able to cross between the two continents by a land bridge called the Bering Land Bridge, which spanned what is now the Bering Strait, during the Wisconsin glaciation, the last major stage of the Pleistocene beginning 50,000 years ago and ending some 10,000 years ago, when ocean levels were lower than today.

Amchitka is said to have been seen and named St. Makarius by Bering in 1741, was sighted by Billings in 1790, and visited by Shishmaref in 1820.

Along the Pacific Ocean's irregular western margins lie many seas, the largest of which are the Celebes Sea, Coral Sea, East China Sea, Philippine Sea, Sea of Japan, South China Sea, Sulu Sea, Tasman Sea, and Yellow Sea.

During much of the Wisconsin era, a land bridge across the Bering Strait allowed the first humans to reach North America from Asia (see Settlement of the Americas).

Sheep originally crossed to North America over the Bering land bridge from Siberia the population in North America peaked in the millions, and the bighorn sheep entered into the mythology of Native Americans.

In some cases, the easiest way to bring it to market would be by sending it through a pipeline across the Bering Strait, and then feeding it into the proposed Alaska gas pipeline.

Egypt has coastlines on both the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea.

To the west is the Yellow Sea, to the south is the East China Sea, and to the east is Ulleung do and Liancourt Rocks in the Sea of Japan (East Sea).

The Balkans meets the Adriatic Sea on the northwest, Ionian Sea on the southwest, the Mediterranean and Aegean Sea on the south and southeast, and the Black Sea on the east and northeast.

The Sea of Crete (, Kritiko Pelagos ) is the sea south of the Aegean Sea, north of the island Crete, and south of the Cyclades.

To West from Åland is Sea of Åland and to North the Bothnian Sea.

To its west are the Yellow Sea and Korea Bay, and to its east lies Japan across the Sea of Japan (East Sea of Korea).

The Yellow Sea is the name given to the northern part of the East China Sea, which is a marginal sea of the Pacific Ocean.

The peninsula is surrounded by the Yellow Sea to the west, the East China Sea and Korea Strait to the south, and the East Sea.

The Yellow Sea and the Korea Bay are off the west coast and the Sea of Japan (East Sea of Korea) is off the east coast.

The Norwegian Sea () is a marginal sea in the North Atlantic Ocean, northwest of Norway.

To the north is the Savu Sea, and to the south is the Timor Sea.
