In the mid nineteenth century, the village was controlled by the Abu Ghosh family.

The reality is that the Abugaush family were forcefully expelled from their village on two occasions first, when they destroyed Saeed Abugaush s homestead in April 1948 and then again, when the Abugaush family fled, along with thousands of other Palestinian families, in the aftermath of the Deir Yassin Massacre, what Palestinians now call now the Nakbeh ( Catastrophe ).

On 18 January 2005, a Palestinian suicide bomber struck the Gush Katif Junction in the Gaza Strip, killing one Israeli and wounding eight more.

In the years after the Nakbeh, as many members of the Abugaush family tried to return to their hometown, they were killed by the Israeli army as infiltrators .

Thirdly, Israel claims that some of the settlers have returned to areas where Jewish settlements existed before 1948 (such as Gush Etzion) and therefore it is an entirely different issue.

The early part of the 20th century saw a more radical approach towards political independence proposed by leaders such as the Lal, Bal, Pal and Aurobindo Ghosh.

The family took part in fighting the Qaisi family in an alliance with a rural lord of the Jerusalem area Mustafa Abu Ghosh, who clashed with the tribe frequently.

Tragically, three civilians were killed two Palestinians and one Chinese citizen all of whom were working in the Gush Katif settlement block in southern Gaza five Palestinians labourers were also wounded.

So forgive me if I feel a bit incredulous towards the nationalistic adulation showered on Ahmad Abughaush, particularly when it comes from the same people that who make fun of Gulf Olympic teams from the Gulf for buying athletes from other countries to compete for them.

Jerusalem housed 209,000 Arabs in 2000 and they make up some 33 of the city s residents and together with the local council of Abu Ghosh, some 19 of the country s entire Arab population.

Most of us didn t know Abughaush before his win, but for Arabs, it didn't take more than his last name for us to know his story.

To the south of Jerusalem, the new route put the Gush Etzion settlement block on the Israeli side, surrounding four Palestinian villages with some 18,000 residents, plus a sizeable amount of Palestinian agricultural land.

When news of the deaths spread, Palestinian militants fired nearly 80 mortars and Qassem rockets at the Gush Katif settlement over a three day period, causing material damage but, fortunately, no casualties.

Following that vote, the Knesset, with an equally clear majority, rejected three bills calling for a delay of the withdrawal on 19 July, amid prolonged protest and demonstrations by those opposing disengagement and attempting to march on the Gaza settlement block of Gush Katif.
