The starting point for this development was the creation of the Statistic Division application for maintenance and dissemination of detailed commodity trade statistics, namely, the United Nations Commodity Trade Statistics Database (UN Comtrade).

A growing number of statistical offices have recently become engaged in the measurement of productivity.

The Statistics Division is developing a worldwide database for trade in services in cooperation with OECD to complement the United Nations Commodity Trade Statistics Database (Comtrade) merchandise trade database.

In the regular health related statistical reporting there do not exist data on the number of abortions.

There are currently a number of open and collaborative projects to create public goods.

While econometric studies are not available, raw data show an increase in reported income and in the number of firms and official workers.

The resources of the United Nations Statistics Division do not allow it to assist a sufficiently large number of individual countries in adapting the classification.

Number of countries that, with the support of ECA, have improved their statistical systems, leading to the collection and dissemination of timely and reliable data.

There are a number of initiatives in place, supported by the Inter agency and Expert Group, to improve the MDG database managed by the Statistics Division.

They were without seaports, geographically remote and isolated from world markets, had poor infrastructure, maintenance problems and inadequate institutional environments, and were solely dependent on a very limited number of commodities for their export earnings.

An increasing number of developing countries have requested assistance, particularly in developing lists of EGs and identifying tariff and non tariff barriers affecting trade in these goods, as well as considering possible negotiating modalities.

But, apart from a few industries, such as toys and bicycles, far fewer jobs are lost to imports than to efficiency improvements.

The national statistical offices responsible for industrial statistics look for advice and guidance from the Statistical Commission for the development and organization of their statistical system.

Available statistical data (ITU World Communications Database) show that there is continued growth in the number of computers worldwide (Table 3).

But rising commodity prices are overcoming reluctance, and prospecting is generating a multitude of new discoveries.

Given the significance of the statistical work of HDRO and the challenge of ensuring that the rigorous statistical work in the HDR meets the highest professional standards, every year one informal thematic consultation has been devoted to discussing statistical issues.

The Statistics Division and its international partners are addressing economic globalization with regards to the recording of goods sent abroad for processing, merchanting and other issues in the update of the 1993 System of National Accounts (SNA) due to be published in 2008.
