The Security Council reiterates its determination to assist the Sudanese people in their efforts to promote national reconciliation, resolve the conflicts in Darfur and restore peace and stability throughout the country and to build a prosperous and united Sudan.

The Mission is mandated to help the Security Council achieve an overall objective, namely, national reconciliation, lasting peace and stability, and a prosperous and united Sudan in which human rights are respected and the protection of all citizens is assured.

During the pre interim and interim periods, all United Nations activity in the Sudan will be aimed at supporting the Sudanese people in establishing a peaceful and democratic Sudan where all citizens will live in conditions of greater dignity and security.

The Darfur conflict resembles the conflict between north and south, the conflict in eastern Sudan exposed last week in a violent eruption in Port Sudan  and the conflicts in the north, in Kordofan, and in central Sudan.

The mandate of UNMIS was to support the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement by coordinating the national reconciliation process to bring lasting peace and stability and build a prosperous and united Sudan which protected all its citizens and their human rights.
