Copper is the oxidising agent (it accepts electrons), and iron is the reducing agent (it loses electrons).

Thus its rapid internationalization was the prerequisite for being able to attract such global customers, and its late arrival on the world scene enabled it to test new technologies (for example, in the case of direct reduced iron enterprises).
