The trochlear nerve (the fourth cranial nerve) is a motor nerve (a somatic efferent nerve) that innervates a single muscle the superior oblique muscle of the eye.

The sixth nerve, the abducens nerve, which innervates the lateral rectus muscle of the eye (moves the eye laterally), is also commonly affected but fourth nerve, the trochlear nerve, (innervates the superior oblique muscle, which moves the eye downward) involvement is unusual.

The facial nerve is the seventh cranial nerve, or simply cranial nerve VII.

These techniques are utilized extensively for children suffering from certain craniofacial abnormalities such as Crouzon syndrome.
