Cooperation on the peaceful use of nuclear energy

Ukraine recognizes the right of Iran to make peaceful use of nuclear energy.

Mining and manufacturing metals is a costly, energy intensive, and, often, ecologically destructive process.

But we must encourage the peaceful use of nuclear energy for development.

A strengthened system of safeguards within the framework of IAEA must in no way lead to limits or conditions restricting the peaceful uses of nuclear energy but instead should provide encouragement.

A lower bound for the required energy is the kinetic energy K mv2 where m is the final mass.

My country has consistently declared its commitment to the principles of international treaties and conventions on the peaceful use of nuclear energy and on non proliferation.

As a member of the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Slovakia recognizes the right to the peaceful use of nuclear energy without the possibility of misusing that technology to produce nuclear arms.

We applaud the Agency's continued fulfilment of this role as a catalyst for development of nuclear technology by the developing countries and as an agent for maintaining the safe use of nuclear energy.

It is particularly important to note that the peaceful use of nuclear energy without possession of the nuclear fuel cycle is an empty proposition.

However, while the absolute amount of worldwide renewable energy use has been rising significantly, the overall share of renewables in the world's total primary energy supply has increased only marginally over the past three decades.

Venezuela supported the role of IAEA in implementing the NPT safeguard clauses, but stressed that such measures must never be an obstacle to the peaceful use of nuclear energy.

His delegation was concerned that the three pillars of the NPT disarmament, non proliferation and guarantees for the peaceful use of nuclear energy  were not being given equal attention.

An integral part of the safeguards system, the additional protocol was an extremely important tool for sustaining an environment for the peaceful use of nuclear energy without the threat of proliferation.

The report underlines the significant contribution being made by the Agency to international peace and stability by promoting the peaceful use of nuclear energy and maintaining and strengthening the nuclear non proliferation regime through safeguards implementation.

Calls for fostering cooperation among the OIC Member States in the area of peaceful uses of nuclear energy for economic development, taking into consideration their needs in the fields of health, sciences, agriculture, energy, research and industry in accordance with the article IV of the NPT.

Usage

Additional protocols to IAEA safeguards agreements were a confidence building measure and an effective method of international verification, providing assurances that nuclear equipment and dual use goods were being put to peaceful uses.

On top of this, José Alencar, Brazil s vice president, and Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez have reintroduced the nuclear question with statements that seem to point beyond legitimate peaceful use of nuclear energy.

Yet its potential could not be tapped to the full without the willingness of all States with nuclear technology to promote the broadest possible exchange of scientific research, information and equipment for peaceful uses of nuclear energy.

Peaceful use

That is ultimate measure of our success and the ultimate measure of our Organization's effectiveness.

However, we must ensure that States parties to the NPT that fully comply with their treaty obligations are guaranteed the right to the peaceful uses of nuclear energy.

Malaysia is confident that the award will contribute further impetus to drawing more support and strengthening the Agency and its Director General as they further carry out their mandate and objectives in promoting the peaceful uses of atomic energy.

The States members of CSTO stress the importance of objective consideration of NPT, encompassing its three basic components non proliferation, cooperation in the peaceful use of atomic energy and nuclear disarmament.
