Convinced that road safety requires partnerships, bridging many sectors of society, to promote and facilitate efforts to prevent road traffic injuries,

Affirming the need for a worldwide effort to raise awareness about the health impact and social and economic costs of injuries caused by road traffic accidents,

The World Health Organization (WHO) dedicated World Health Day to road safety and, together with the World Bank, launched the World Report on Road Traffic Injury Prevention.

Iceland has taken seriously the recommendations of the World report on road traffic injury prevention.

Convinced that road traffic injuries are a major public health problem requiring concerted multisectoral efforts for effective and sustainable prevention,

However, as rightly pointed out by the WHO World report on road traffic injury prevention, road traffic injuries can largely be prevented and controlled through rational analysis and counter measures.

Advocacy of this nature is seen as instrumental in mobilizing the resources that developing countries will need to respond to the global road safety crisis and carry out the recommendations of the World Report on Road Traffic Injury Prevention.

Funding to reduce injuries caused by traffic accidents is not commensurate with the scope of the problem and is generally not enough to carry out the necessary awareness campaigns or set up the required machinery to supervise, evaluate and monitor results.

As long as this is so, and as long as undesirable human behaviour is an important cause of traffic accidents, education, complemented by enforcement measures, adequate infrastructures and sound collaborative efforts, will be the key to reducing road casualties.

Partners in the Road Safety Collaboration are producing a series of how to manuals that will provide guidance to countries on how to implement some of the recommendations identified in the World Report on Road Traffic Injury Prevention.

It is very disturbing to be reminded that road traffic injuries continue to pose a major public health problem and are a leading cause of death in many countries, especially in the developing world.

The resolution on road safety and health also called upon Member States to prioritize road safety as a public health issue and to take steps to implement measures that are known to be effective in reducing road traffic injuries.

It compiles data on road accidents and prepares annual road safety plans.

It is true that many sectors have an important part to play in preventing deaths or injury caused by traffic accidents hence the need to work together with civil society, the private sector and the academic community.

We also wish to acknowledge the important coordination role played by the World Health Organization and the valuable framework for road safety action provided by the Organization's global report on road traffic injury prevention (A 60 181).

Reducing road traffic injuries is important to the successful achievement of several of the Millennium Development Goals, particularly those related to poverty, child mortality reduction and environmental sustainability.

As such, it serves as both an advocacy tool and a technical document, including six major recommendations on what countries can do to address the problem of road traffic injuries.

As a result, many Governments have declared their support for road safety initiatives, a number of non governmental organizations have launched or strengthened their activities in this area and there has been an increase in the financial resources targeted at efforts to reduce road traffic injuries.

Within the United Nations system itself, a number of agencies have used this momentum to initiate or accelerate programmes aimed at reducing road traffic injuries.

Such grim statistics definitely demand urgent attention and concerted efforts by the international community aimed at tackling and reversing the situation, as road traffic injuries are largely preventable.

Nevertheless, over the past year, there has been increasing consensus around the globe on the need to address road traffic injuries as a global public health problem.

According to the same report, if appropriate action is not taken, by 2020 road traffic injuries will climb to become the world's third leading contributor to disease and injury.

The prevention and treatment of injuries resulting from domestic and sexual violence have been priorities of the Ministry of Health since 1998.

The actions developed give priority to the introduction of local policies to prevent and treat of injuries resulting from violence against women.

Mobilizing resources remains a concern for many organizations involved in global and national road safety efforts, as the level of funding targeted at reducing road traffic injuries is far from commensurate with the scale of the problem.

No reports were made regarding major DDT incidents, such as production or road accidents and spills, resulting in human exposures to and or environmental contamination.

Of the 66 MRAP accidents between November 7, 2007, and June 8, 2008, almost 40 were due to rollovers caused by bad roads, weak bridges, or driver error.

In addition to the enormous economic and social costs to individuals, families and communities, road traffic injuries place a heavy burden on national health services, in particular those of developing countries.
