The activities covered by subprogramme 1 comprise only those implemented at Headquarters.

The results of activities undertaken in 2004 are outlined in this section.

The Coordination of Intelligence for Prevention (CIP) of the Federal Preventive Police is responsible for inspecting and monitoring persons and cargo, exchanging information and coordinating activities implemented as well as for legal and administrative procedures for protecting the country's airports.

The representative of IMO provided information on recent activities, including the adoption of new instruments and progress in the development of a voluntary member State audit scheme for IMO.

Depending on the countries in concern, the activities carried out resulted in translating the NAPs into a more fundable' format, strengthening the integration of combating desertification into the overall national planning and programming framework, and the establishment and reinforcing of institutional modalities for effective implementation.

The meeting reviewed biotechnology related activities carried out in the region discussed the potential role, benefits and risks associated with the use of biotechnology and made recommendations for planning and implementing a biotechnology programme for sustainable development.

One such programme is the Literacy Assessment and Monitoring Programme of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

The number of death sentences carried out since the consideration of the initial periodic report had steadily decreased.

Between 2000 and 2004 the number of death sentences carried out had been reduced almost ninefold.

Second, all governments, rich and poor, should be accountable for meeting the SDGs as implementers. The MDGs applied mainly to poor countries as implementers and to rich countries as donors.

Responsibility has been assigned for all outstanding recommendations, including those of an ongoing nature.
